Major new study published with SIREN

September 11, 2022

We are part of a major new publication in the Journal of Infection (official journal of the British Infection Association) entitled "Antibody correlates of protection from SARS-CoV-2 reinfection prior to vaccination: a nested case-control within the SIREN study".  This journal ranks 4 out of 94 in Infectious Diseases.

This was a huge consortium effort involving the UK HSA, the Laboratory of Viral Zoonotics (University of Cambridge), the Francis Crick Institute, NIHR, LSHTM and the Viral Pseudotype Unit. This is a landmark study on SARS-CoV-2 for the Temperton Pseudotype Lab as it demonstrates that before vaccination, protection against SARS-CoV-2 reinfection was directly correlated with anti-S levels, PV-N (pseudotype virus neutralisation) and LV-N (live virus neutralisation) titres, but not with anti-N levels. Detectable LV-N titres were sufficient for protection, whilst PV-N titres >100 were required for a protective effect. A very dedicated duo of VPU postdocs, Kelly Da Costa and Diego Cantoni undertook all the intricate neutralisation assays.
